Driving Factors for our reconfiguration:
  • We added another employee and could not collaborate easily in our existing
    arrangement.
  • We had several pieces on the floor that had been discontinued and there
were several new enhancements to various products that we wished to show.
  • As our organization grew, our roles within the showroom changed and it
became necessary to relocate employees so that we could more effectively
    serve our customers.
  • Our finish and product resources had outgrown the amount of space we had
originally designated for them. This created difficulties in locating items and
also lead to inadequate layout space to effectively use them.
In the week leading up to the reconfiguration we had several outside sources come
in to repair water damage that occurred before we had our roof repaired. We also
started moving our resource library into its new space to have it out of the way on
tear down day. Two days before tear down we placed large trash boxes at each
person's desk to encourage them to get rid of things that were no longer needed as
they started to pack.
August 17 - Tear Down
First thing Friday we start disassembling because we have to be done by noon when
the carpet cleaners arrive. As we disassemble we sort pieces into several different
piles including: things to reused in the new configuration, items that we can sell and
items that need to be recycled or thrown away.
August 20-21
Monday morning we started reassembling our space. Since we are a working
showroom every workstation is configured differently and uses different product. This
creates a really customized work environment but greatly slows the installation
process. By 10:00 we are able to start hooking back up the first computer and by
quiting time four of the five workstations were completed and the employees were
moving back in. By noon on Tuesday we were finished with our reconfiguration.
